Once upon a time there was an ambulance
service in Frobisher Bay and yes the EMT's girlfriend dressed him funny, this
was the 70's and the style was in. They laughed too about bringing old
Hallowell Cadillac ambulances to the Arctic but they rode well on the bad roads
and were toasty warm in the winter, which was most of the time. Finally
the municipality recognized that this was an area they should be responsible
for. This particular ambulance was retired in 1980 after an accident and
the cost of a number of other safety related issues.
So having deeper pockets that I they
went out and bought these:

Now as fine as these appear they ride
like a row boat in rough water and they can't be driven to the hospital
entrance. National Health and Welfare in 1978 or so decided to expand the
hospital and construct a new emergency entrance. Of course they got
measurements from the ambulance at the time to ensure it would fit. Not!

The picture is not that great but you
get the idea. When we arrived we pulled past the entrance enough to open
the driver door, but not the passenger door. We had to stop at the stairs
to let them out. Then we went around the outside wall to get to the back
of the ambulance. The contractors put in a ramp, a bit of a tight turn for
the stretcher and in their wisdom did not make the door accessible without
lifting the stretcher. So it will not take much of your imagination to
figure out the where the new rigs park.
After this little history lesson I have a few items left over
and they are listed to your left
